What Is It?

The EZ Fin Tool is a simple template that allows the skier to take all three fin measurements in less than 2 minutes without removing the wing. Most importantly. Distance from Tail (DFT) readings are much more consistent and accurate. With the EZ Fin Tool, DFT adjustments of a few thousandths can be made confidently. The tool yields a "Full DFT" measurements which can easily be converted to measurements obtained by other methods. Conversion would only be necessary for the first time setup.

How Does It Work?

Update 4/30/2010
Now you can have the best of both worlds, flat (factory) DFT readings and the speed and accuracy of the Ezfintool!

In order to do this, you must get extremely accurate DFT measurements on your ski by both methods. I know, if you could accurately measure DFT by the flat method, you wouldn't have purchased the Ezfintool - right? Here's how -

1. Carefully measure and document with the Ezfintool all three of your fin's current settings.

2. Loosen the set screws holding your fin and move it as far forward as you can, then tighten the set screws.

3. Now measure the DFT by both methods. You should be able to get an accurate flat reading because you have a much larger flat area to rest the caliper on. Work on these measurements until you are satisfied that you have them right. Calculate the difference between the two measurements, on my ski its .099". Take a sharpie and write this number on your Ezfintool.

4. Move your fin back to its original position, tighten it down and measure it to verify that you have it back where it was in step 1.

5. Anytime you want to measure DFT, carefully open your caliper until it reads the difference that you calculated in step 3. When you get it there, simply push the zero reset button, measure the DFT with your Ezfintool and the measurement you obtain is the flat method measurement. Don't forget to reset your caliper back to zero in the closed position before you measure length or depth.

Measure your fin the simple, fast, consistent way with the Ezfintool!

Tips

  1. If you are wanting to obtain an exact depth measurement, I recommend measuring the depth of your tool with your caliper (measure it like you would the fin). This will give you the exact number that you would add to your measured depth with the tool.

  2. When measuring DFT, it works best to have the caliper on the fin side. Make sure the caliper is on the bottom of the ski and parallel to the fin and tool. Just open the jaws till they contact the tool and the back of the fin.

  3. If you are having trouble obtaining consistent measurements, try clamping the tool to the fin and use both hands to operate the caliper. Pictured are Irwin clamps available at your local hardware store.

  4. The EZ Fin Tool is precision machined from tempered aluminum. It will not flex, bend or change shape under normal use. It will even fit in most caliper cases.
